Brooklyn Academy High School Electronic Devices Policy
Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school: 1) cell phones 2) laptops, tablets, iPads and other similar computing devices 3) portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS.
The use of cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems at school is subject to the restrictions below.
Confiscation and return of electronic items
All cell phones, portable music and entertainment devices and other electronic devices found in the possession of a student in the school without the express authorization of the school and staff will result in:
Discipline
Any students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment system in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

The use of cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems at school is subject to the restrictions below.
- Cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems will be collected by the school when students enter the school building and stored in a designated location until the end of the school day, according to the following procedures:
- When going through scanning, students must place all electronic devices in their backpacks or scanning trays, and the backpacks and trays must be sent through the x-ray machines
- All students entering Brooklyn Academy must check all cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems with school staff member upon entry to the building
- Devices will be held in a safe, locked space throughout the school day.
- Students will not have access to devices during the school day.
- At dismissal, students will meet with a designated member of school staff for device distribution, which will occur at different areas of the school, based on last name.
- Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used to take any video or photographic images without the explicit approval of school administration.
- Cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination. Any student found turning on or using a device during an exam will have the exam invalidated.
- Cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used during school fire drills or other emergency preparedness exercises.
- Cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school trips, without the explicit approval of the teacher.
- Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used in locker rooms or bathrooms.
Confiscation and return of electronic items
All cell phones, portable music and entertainment devices and other electronic devices found in the possession of a student in the school without the express authorization of the school and staff will result in:
- 1st Confiscation - The item will be returned to the students at end of school day.
- 2nd, 3rd and 4th confiscation - The item will be returned to parent following a school conference.
- 5th Confiscation - Revocation of privilege to bring item to school.
Discipline
Any students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment system in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
